Salary = $21.75 - $24.98 per hour, based on qualifications

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform all the duties pertaining to misdemeanor probation, whether assisting clients with information, collecting fees, answering phones, filing, administering drug screens, and to see that court ordered probationary rules are followed. To perform any and all clerical duties deemed necessary during the course of the business day and maintain a professional and business-like attitude toward clients and other county personnel. Due to the increasing Spanish speaking population in Wilson County and the influx of Spanish speaking customers to the Probation Office, it has become essential to have a bi-lingual employe that is proficient in Spanish and English to ensure we serve the citizens of Wilson County.  This position reports to the Probation Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 
  • To communicate in Spanish and English by written and spoken word with the Spanish-speaking population served by Wilson County Probation.
 
  • Court attendance and documentation.
 
  • Consults with Probation Director to review department operations/activities, review/resolve problems, receive advice/direction, and provide recommendations.
 
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, case records, budget documents, performance evaluations, or other documents.
 
  • Employee must monitor court ordered payments for Probation Fees and Court Costs.
 
  • Meet with clients to review probationary guidelines and to monitor progress in abiding by the rules of probation and court orders, maintains bi-weekly or monthly contact with probationers and to provide guidance and counseling to clients.
 
  • Make referrals for public service work and monitor completion and performance of such work.
 
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, petitions, records, and enters them into the client’s file.
 
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, verifies accuracy of entered data and make corrections, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other probation related software.
 
  • Answers incoming phone calls: provides information and assistance, records/relays messages or directs phone calls to appropriate personnel, returns calls and makes calls to clients who have missed their appointment.
 
  • Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of laws/regulation.
 
  • Communicates with county officials, employees, other departments, law enforcement personnel, judges, court officials, lawyers, therapists, victims, school officials, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed regarding probation activities or to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.
 
  • Maintains working knowledge of and executes installation of GPS monitoring system, processes and equipment.
 
  • Performs other related duties as required by Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Proficient in English and Spanish written and verbal communication skills.  Must have good math, typing, and filing skills, phone etiquette and a knowledge of administering drug screens.
Must have three (3) years previous experience and or/or training that includes probation or detention: or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. Must pass a background check.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (required).  Substitution of Experience for Education: Experience in probation or detention can substitute for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Verbal Aptitude :  Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude :  Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

Functional Reasoning :  Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.

ADA COMPLIANCE/PHYSICAL DEMANDS ANALYSIS

Physical Ability :  Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (15-30 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors : Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as traffic hazards or violence.
