Position Overview The First Deputy advises and assists the Court Clerk in the management of Court Clerk’s office activities to ensure uniformity in standards for the office. On behalf of and in the absence of the Court Clerk, attends meetings of the Board of County Commissioners and other public boards. Performs a variety of administrative duties in the County court system. Provides excellent customer service to the public, judicial officers, attorneys, and other courthouse staff.
Compensation Typical Functions: - Assumes duties of the Court Clerk during absence or unavailability of the Court Clerk.
- Represents the Court Clerk at meetings or other occasions as required.
- Assist the Court Clerk in the direction and supervision of Deputy Court Clerks.
- Records, files, and maintains the proceedings of the District Court, including processing criminal, civil, traffic, small claims, petitions for domestic violence, name changes, anti-harassment orders, and so forth from filing to final disposition.
- Responds to inquiries from the general public, attorneys, police and other agencies regarding case information made personally, by telephone, or by mail on all cases maintained in the County.
- Pulls and return files to proper place.
- Prepares a high volume of certified copies of documents upon request and charges appropriate fees.
- Handles payments for fees, fines and court costs.
- Handles and assembles documents such as subpoenas, judicial orders, writs, injunctions, and judgments.
- Coordinates court room proceedings and processes orders of the court.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities: - Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Must be able to perform and willing to perform basic supervision of others and work collaboratively with coworkers and other departmental supervisors.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a professional manner at all times.
- Ability to properly receive and receipt payments.
- Ability to work effectively with judges, attorneys, law enforcement personnel, and coworkers.
- Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
- General knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state or local laws, rules, and regulations.
- Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and computer software programs.
- Knowledge of correct English usage and grammar; fluency speaking Spanish a plus.
- Ability to follow, apply, interpret, and explain instructions and/or guidelines. Ability to determine work priorities.
- Ability to make decisions and take appropriate actions.
- Ability to meet schedules and deadlines of the work area.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
Minimum Qualifications: Education or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and experience to be successful in the position.
